Hybrid Geothermal Pool Tied System Applied to 1970′s Scottsdale, AZ Home for Unique Medical Condition
PROBLEM
A member of the family in this home has a unique medical condition that requires a low temperature. To please all family members, this requires a large temperature difference in different areas of the home. Their previous traditional system was unable to meet the requirements and drew very large utility bills.
GOALS
- Temperature differences throughout home
- Reduce utility costs
RESULTS
- Controlled comfort meets requirements
- Lowered utility costs significantly
- Controlled pool temperature
- Extended swimming season
- Incentives & tax credits received

Joe & Jean Schantz in Scottsdale, AZ
The Schantz family recently relocated from the Northeast to Scottsdale. The idea of sun shine and blue skies over icicles and snow seemed appealing, but having a child with a medical condition where he cannot be exposed to warm temperatures, Arizona posed a new set of challenges. Moving into their 1970′s constructed, 4,000+ square foot, flat roof home in the winter time, the biggest challenge the Schantz’s would face was not immediately obvious.
Once the summer months began in 2009, the utility costs to keep the East side of the home at 70 degrees began to climb. Month after month the Schantz family was paying more than $1,000 (each month) and as high as $1,500 in June and July!! Something had to be done that could make these bills more reasonable and allow them to cool their son’s room independently from the rest of the home so that the sweaters for the rest of the family could be removed.
They began to research air conditioning companies to explore what their options were. During this investigation they were introduced to an approved GeOasis professional installer.
They reviewed their options in traditional air to air, ductless (room or window units) and finally GeOasis Hybrid Heating & Cooling systems that would tie into the Schantz’s existing swimming pool.
The benefits of achieving more than 30 EER, installing a separate console style unit in Brian’s room for independent control, and having control of their pool temperature during the hot summer months, as well as extending the swimming “season” made Hybrid Geothermal systems the front runner in this decision. With the additional utility incentives from APS and the Federal Tax Credit for Renewable Energy, the net cost of these new systems was not much higher than replacing their existing systems with high efficiency, traditional air to air units.
Unlike typical air conditioning upgrades, the timing of this installation had to be orchestrated perfectly to ensure that the son’s room never exceeded 75 degrees. After almost two weeks of diligent efforts and attention to detail, the Schantz’s renovation was operational.
One of the biggest benefits, others than those listed already in this article is that this is one of the only systems in the world that will allow one system to run in the heating mode, while another system is running in the air conditioning mode. We are all excited to have been part of such a great project for such great people. No longer do the Schantz’s have to worry about the life threatening reliability of old, inefficient package units, freezing half the house to keep one room at the target temperature, or handing over thousands, upon thousands of dollars every year to their utility company.
